HOW TO BE BLESSED

May 24, 2024

Blessed is the person who does not walk
in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
But his delight is in the Law of the Lord,
And on His Law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2

STABILIZE YOUR DAY WITH THE BIBLE. Right at the beginning of Psalms, these verses put forward a strong truth: Blessed is the person who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked but instead delights in the law of the Lord. There is blessing in paying attention to God and putting Him first. I did that this morning. I woke up, got a cup of coffee, and went outside. Where I live right now, it’s spring, and there was dew on the ground. I put my bare feet on the grass, drank my coffee, and enjoyed the Word as I looked up at the trees and the gray sky. It was awesome. I listened to a few chapters of the book Acts with Alexander Scourby as the narrator. Then a construction worker came up my driveway looking for his worksite. A neighbor walked by with his dog and chatted with me. I am glad I started out seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness first because it calibrated me for the day that got going sooner than I had planned. How quickly  things can come up into our space – for me, they walked up to my lawn, but it could also be something taking up the real estate of your brain. Getting Scripture intake will help and prepare you for your day.

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you. Matthew 6:33

LET GOD’S PRESENCE PERMEATE YOUR LIFE. I watched a cooking show where they made a balsamic reduction. It was an Italian dish, and the chef showed how, with low heat, you simmer and evaporate the water, leaving this flavorful, thick sauce. It parallels our devotion to the Lord and gives a visual for how we can stay in His presence and get better and better. When I was young, we held a camp for our youth group, and we all stood by the bonfire, played songs, laughed, and shared stories. Then, when we all came back together the next day, we still smelled like campfire. Like a lingering campfire scent, God’s presence will permeate our lives when we spend time with Him. How fortunate we are to know the Lord and to be able to set Him first in our lives. When we do – we are blessed!

DAILY CONFESSION:
I am blessed because I seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness – all the things I need in life will be provided to me. I am blessed because I will not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scoffer. Instead, I delight in the Law of the Lord, and I meditate on it day and night. (Matthew 6:33; Psalm 1:1-2)

God bless you,
Pastor Jeff Perry
