Becoming Spiritually Strong

Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. God wants you to be spiritually strong—to learn to hear from Him and be led by Him. Here are two practical ways to help you develop your spirit and grow stronger in your walk with God.

GET IN THE WORD. God’s Word is life and it changes us. God doesn’t ask that we turn our brains off but that we get our minds renewed (Ephesians 4:23). The Bible will change the way we think—and help us to be led by the Spirit and not the flesh (Galatians 5:16). When you need to make big life decisions, turn off the TV and spend some time in the Word of God.

PRAY IN THE SPIRIT. Every day pray in the Holy Spirit. When you do, you are speaking mysteries to God (1 Corinthians 14:2) and strengthening your spirit (Jude 1:20). It will also help you to become more sensitive to God’s leading. You don’t have to flip a coin or look around for popular opinion. The Spirit of God will guide you and help you.

Our Christian experience should not make us weird. In fact, God is the one who takes us out of dysfunction and makes us functional. As we commit to developing ourselves through prayer, studying the Word, and obeying the Holy Spirit, we will see victory as we face life’s battles. We’ll be less carnal and more spiritual, less irritable and more loving, less selfish and more giving. We’ll take definitive steps into greater effectiveness, people will respond to the truth of the Gospel, and we will see revival in our generation.
